FAQ

How long is Writing?

Writing is 30 minutes.

What are the tasks in Writing?

1. text message to a friend; 2. email

What score do you need to pass?

You pass with 60 of 100. The written part needs at least 45. The oral part needs at least 15. In this app you are marked ready when every module is at least 70.

How to prepare

You write two short texts: a message to a friend, then an email. Each one has points you must cover. Word ranges are short. A complete short text beats a long text that drops a point.

The friend message can use du. The email depends on who receives it. Decide du or Sie before the first word and keep it.

A worked example

Hi Tim, kannst du am Samstag auf meine Katze aufpassen? Ich bin bei meinen Eltern. Futter steht in der Küche. Danke, Nora.

Points: Saturday, the cat, where the food is. About the length of a text message, not a letter.

Each content point is scored on its own. Polite German around a missing point does not replace it.

What usually drops the point

How to use the mock

Split the timer in half before you start. Finish text one, even roughly, then start text two. Come back only if both texts already contain their points.

  1. Write the cat message above from memory, then compare.
  2. Turn the same facts into an email to Frau Berg with Sie.
  3. Use the A2 writing rubric in the mock and score one text yourself.

How to spend the time

Two texts, one timer. Write the shorter message first so a slow email cannot eat it. Each text has points you must cover. Put the points in the margin as single words, write until each word has a sentence, and only then look at the word range. A short text that covers every point beats a long text that dropped one.

Choose du or Sie from the recipient and keep it in the greeting, the pronoun and the closing. A message to a friend can be direct. An email to a club, a school or a landlord usually wants Sie. If the task does not name the relationship, the word Frau, Herr or a surname is the signal.

Read the finished text once as the other person. Could they do what you ask? If the day is there but the place is not, add the place in one sentence. Do not add a new story. A2 writing is a complete note, not a composition.
